LIFE IN POETRY

One of the most interesting sites I have come across while browsing in the internet is Life in Poetry of Philoctetes Center of New York. It is sponsored by YouTube. It conducts discussions of poetry in English language of such great poets like W. B. Yeats, T. S. Eliot, Seamus Heaney, G. M. Hopkins, Thomas Hardy and others. The discussion is conducted by important writers, critics, and teachers. One of the panelists in a discussion on Samuel Beckett`s plays included Edward Albee, an important American playwright. . The discussion continues up to one hour and 40 minutes. View it whenever you have time. It is a rewarding experience.

I wish there are  discussions of important Asian writers in English in a similar manner. This is one important way of familiarizing ourselves and the world with the achievements of Asian writers in different Asian languages.

But, sadly, some of us writers do not even have an email. We simply do not know how to make use of the opportunities available to us. I do not understand this apathy.

ನುಡಿಸಿರಿ

ಈ ಸಲದ ನುಡಿಸಿರಿ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ನಾನು ಆಹ್ವಾನಿತನಾಗಿ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದೆ. ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತು ನಿಮಿಷಗಳನ್ನು ನನಗೆ ಪದ್ಯ ಓದಲು ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರು. ನಾನು ಓದಿದ ಪದ್ಯದ ಕೆಲವು ಭಾಗವನ್ನು ರಾಗಸಂಯೋಜನೆ ಮಾಡಿ ಹಾಡಿದರು. ಅದರ ಆಕಾಶವಾಣಿ ಪ್ರಸಾರಕ್ಕೂ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ಮಾರನೇ ದಿನ ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ ಮಂಗಳೂರು ಆಕಾಶವಾಣಿಯಿಂದ ಅದರ ಪ್ರಸಾರ ಇತ್ತು. ಹಾಗೆಂದು ನನಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸಿದವರು ಮುರಳೀಧರ ಉಪಾಧ್ಯರು. ಇದರಿಂದಾಗಿ ಅವರಂಥಾ ಸಹೃದಯಿ ನನಗೆ ಮಾರನೇ ದಿನವಾದರೂ ಕೇಳುಗರಾಗಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದರು.

ಇಡೀ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆದಿರುವ ಈ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಮೊದಲು ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸಿದ್ದು ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಅಚ್ಚುಕಟ್ಟುತನ, ದಕ್ಷತೆ, ಮತ್ತು ಅತಿಥಿಗಳ ಬಗೆಗೆ ತೋರಿದ ಕಾಳಜಿ. ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಒಪ್ಪಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಪ್ರತಿ ಹಂತದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಬಂಧಪಟ್ಟವರು ಫೋನು ಮಾಡಿ ವಿಚಾರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಮನೆಯಿಂದ ಹೊರಟಿರಾ, ಎಷ್ಟು ಗಂಟೆಗೆ ತಲುಪುತ್ತೀರಿ ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿ ಈ ಯೋಗಕ್ಷೇಮದ ವಿಚಾರಣೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರಯಾಣ-ಮರುಪ್ರಯಾಣಗಳ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಅಂಶಗಳನ್ನು ವ್ಯಾಪಿಸಿತ್ತು.

ನನಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟವಾದ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಅಂಶ ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಕಾರ್ಯಕರ್ತರ ತಯ್ಯಾರಿ. ನನ್ನ ಜೀವನವಿವರಗಳನ್ನು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಓದಿ ಏನು ಹೇಳಬೇಕೆಂದು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿ ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಕಾರ್ಯಕರ್ತರು ಪರಿಚಯ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಪರಿಚಯ ಮಾಡುವ ಕೆಲವೇ ಕ್ಷಣಗಳ ಮೊದಲು, ಸಾರ್, ನಿಮ್ಮ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಒಂದೆರಡು ಪಾಯಿಂಟ್ ಹೇಳಿಬಿಡಿ ಸಾರ್ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಬಹುಶಃ ಅನೇಕ ಲೇಖಕರು ಇಂಥಾ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಎದುರಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ. ಹಾಗೆ ಕೇಳದೆಯೂ ಪರಿಚಯ ಮಾಡುವವರಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಒಬ್ಬರು ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರು ಒಂದು ಸಲ "ಇವರು ಮೂಗೇಲ ಎಂಬ ನಾಟಕ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ" ಎಂದು ಪರಿಚಯ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರು. ಗೌರಿಸುಂದರ ಎಂಬವರು ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ಸಂಪಾದಿಸಿ ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಿದ ಸಹಸ್ರಮಾನದ ಕವಿತೆಗಳು ಎಂಬ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ರಾಮಚಂದ್ರ ಶರ್ಮ ಎಂದೂ ನಾನು 1923ನೇ ಇಸವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಂಡ್ಯ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇನೆಂದೂ ಈಗ ಸತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆಂದೂ ಪರಿಚಯ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದು, ನನ್ನಿಂದ ನನ್ನ ಬಯೋಡೆಟಾ, ನನ್ನ ಕುರಿತು ಶಿವತೀರ್ಥನ್ ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಿದ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಮೊದಲಾದವನ್ನು ತರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಮೇಲೆ.

ಇಂಥಾದ್ದರ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ನುಡಿಸಿರಿಯ ದಕ್ಷತೆ ರಿಫ್ರೆಶಿಂಗ್ ಆಗಿತ್ತು. ದಕ್ಷತೆಯೇ ಸೃಜನಶೀಲ ಆಗಬಹುದು ಎನ್ನಿಸುವುದು ಇಂಥಾ ಸಂದರ್ಭಗಳಲ್ಲಿ.

ಇಂಥಾ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಗಳು ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸುತ್ತವೆ; ಹೊಸ ಐಡಿಯಾಗಳನ್ನು ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಾಕುತ್ತವೆ. ಪರಿಚಿತರನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿಯಾಗುವುದಕ್ಕಂತೂ ಹೇಳಿ ಮಾಡಿದ ಜಾಗಗಳು. ಇಂಥಾದ್ದನ್ನು ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಡಾ. ಮೋಹನ ಆಳ್ವರಿಗೆ ನನ್ನ ಹೃತ್ಪೂರ್ವಕ ಅಭಿನಂದನೆ.

Ramanujan`s Many Ramayanas

It is regretting that Oxford University Press, publishers of A. K. Ramanujan`s Collected Essays, in which his controversial "Many Ramayanas" appears, has given a statement in the court that it has  decided to withdraw Ramanujan`s book from the market and has also decided not to reprint it. To go by the report I have read, it has given a statement in the court that Ramanujan`s essay is against the pluralistic structure of this country.

Personally I feel that Ramanujan`s essay on the Ramayanas supports the pluralistic cultures of this country by bringing to our notice many versions of the Ramayanas. Whatever it is, the statements of Prof. Paula Rechamn, William H. Dauforth and others that the Oxford University Press should relinquish its rights on Ramanujan`s book so that the book is reprinted by other publishers to make  this scholarly work  available to the academicians and the public is just and reasonable. I urge my friends and readers to press the Oxford University Press to relinquish its rights of Ramanujan`s book. Making his works available at all the time is a tribute we pay to Ramanujan, who, through his poetry and translations, has enriched Kannada language too.
